Xbox avatars are getting an upgrade this fall. Microsoft released a trailer showing off a selection of different looks and styles you can apply to your avatar. The biggest change is the animation of the avatars.
Before, the avatars were rough around the edges with a low-quality animation. The trailer below reveals a brand new animation that looks like it came from Pixar but is actually being developed in Unity.
Since the launch of the Xbox One, avatars have become much more of a background feature. This new overhaul could bring them back in the spotlight, similar to how the Xbox 360 handled avatars. The trailer also shows many ways of expressing all gamers.
The option of being in a wheelchair or having a prosthetic limb are expressible in the new avatar features as they are shown in the reveal trailer. As a whole, the new avatar system is much more diverse than the original. New body type options and even a pregnancy option allow users to express themselves the way they want to.
Lead project manager at Xbox, Bryan Saftler, states that “there are no more checkboxes” for players. Clothing and props for avatars are also gender neutral which means you can use any of them no matter the design.
Windows 10 users will get their hands on the new avatar system later this year with the Xbox community following soon after.
